Consciousness is divided into three levels: Consciousness is a fully awake condition in which a person understands, talks, moves, and responds normally. When a person looks to be awake and aware of their environment (conscious), but is not responding properly, this is referred to as decreased awareness. If a person appears to be unaware of their surroundings (not conscious), they are said to be in a comatose state. Why is consciousness seen as a continuum?

Consciousness is portrayed as a continuum, with some levels related to consciousness and others not, and the brain is thought to be intrinsically conscious, reaching down to extremely basic and non-reflective levels. They argued that because of this intrinsic connection between mind and matter, there cannot be any such thing as an unconscious brain--any part of the brain that is inactive is still thinking and feeling.
