But once you leave home, you can't return unless your parents relive some of their anger by accepting you back into their life.

Recidivism is the opposite of ascent. When someone returns to their old ways after trying to change for better, they are showing that their previous efforts at improvement were in vain. This means that there is no hope for them if they want to change their negative habits.

For example, when confronted with a hostile environment, we develop weapons or defenses to kill or be killed by others. These characteristics adaptations help us survive in the wild.
There are two ways that an organism can change its behavior: through learning and inheritance. Learning occurs through experience, which alters how it functions. This alteration is called a "learning response." For example, if you squeeze a rat hard enough, it will stop biting you. This is its learning response. The next time you put it in a situation where it is squeezed hard, it will have a learning response of not biting you even though you're still squeezing it. Inheritance means that your learning responses will be passed on to your offspring who won't know any different.
Characteristic adaptations are those traits that an organism cannot change through experience or learning. They are fixed aspects of their makeup. Humans have hair color, skin tone, and many other characteristic adaptations. However, these traits can be altered through learning -- for example, if you wear clothes that match your skin tone, then people will think you're a commoner which is not desirable in today's world.
